Data Protection & Cybersecurity

Egypt began the e-government policies within the framework established by Dr. Ahmed Darwish, then Minister of State for Administrative Development. He occupied that post in 2004 and continued till 2011.

Under the current government, the digitization of government services including certain financial aspects are taking a new momentum.

The development is also resonating in the private sector including in the banking sector. Data protection concerns becomes more and more apparent with the increased footprint of Egyptians in the worldwide web.

GOE introduced privacy legislation modeled after the GDPR. The GDPR development remains a guiding light for the GOE to follow. Certain aspects of the GDPR are not available to the GOE. The European Union has cloud with data controllers and data processors, that is hard to rival by other countries.

I&D has lawyers who have studied the GDPR and are familiar with the domestic laws and approaches related to data protection. This is an area of law which is notably evolving and increasing. This is an aspect of law which not only impacts the fintech companies, but also all companies that have a wide consumer base. Currently this specialization is operating under the supervision of two of our partners, Bahieldin Elibrachy and Amir N. Ibrahim. We expect it to develop into a full-fledged department within a few years from now.
